The Final Perseverance of the Saints

The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. Job 17:9

There has been much debate down through history on the subject of “eternal security,” but this doctrine has been perverted by many people. We as the people of God must base our beliefs and doctrines on the Word of God.

Job 17:9 tells us that a righteous man shall hold on his way and will become stronger and stronger. The man who is righteous before God has a way of his own. It is not the way of the world or the flesh, but a way paved by Divine Grace. This verse plainly teaches us that a righteous man shall hold to his way because of who is holding him. We that are saved are held by the hand of Almighty God (Psalms 139:10).

We must first of all be clear on what we mean by perseverance of the saints. The scripture does not teach that a man can reach his journey’s end without traveling on the right road. We do not believe in just one act of faith and repentance, but a continual daily act … because we are saved.

Though we as believers can and do sin, we are not habitual in it and our desire is for true holiness. A true believer can never turn totally from the Lord. Thank God for the chastening hand of our Lord.

I Peter 1:23 says we are born again not of corruptible seed, but incorruptible by the Word of God. Our birth is of a spiritual seed that can never see corruption.

John 10:27-31 says that we are His sheep and His sheep hear his voice and have eternal life. It is eternal without an end and we shall never perish.

I Peter 1:5 says we are kept by the Power of God. We are saved by Grace and kept by Grace.

II Corinthians 1:22 says we are sealed by the earnest of the Spirit. An earnest is a down payment. God sealed us with His Spirit and we are purchased by, never to be for sale again.

Ephesians 1:13-14 says we are sealed by the Spirit until the redemption of the purchased possession. We that are saved are a Christ purchased possession and will be fully redeemed when we reach Heaven.

Hebrews 6:4-9 says if it were possible to fall away that you could not be saved again because Christ would have to die again for your sins. Christ died once and for all to redeem His people from sin.

In conclusion, to the saint … oh how this should encourage us to live holy and godly lives. The very thought that we are already seated in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus should drive us to holy devotion. Eternal security is not a license to sin to the true believer, but is one of the greatest comforts fallen man could ever enjoy.

To the sinner … if you would repent of your sin and put your faith in Jesus Christ He would save you now, and keep you all the way to the end. There’s not middle ground when it comes to Christ. Repent and put your faith in Him and you will persevere to the end.

Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
